How to Choose the Right Flooring

When deciding what flooring material to go with, consider these questions:

  • Where are you installing your new floors? Is it below, on or above grade? Basements are susceptible to ground moisture, so your flooring choice may be different from what you’d choose for a bedroom.

  • Will the area be humid? Bathrooms and kitchens can cause water damage.

  • Will the area have radiant heat? Some flooring materials aren’t radiant-heat compatible.

  • Does the area get a lot of sunlight? Observe the space throughout the day. UV lighting can fade certain flooring materials.

  • Do you have accurate measures? If not, a professional floor measure can account for doorways, fireplaces, built-ins, etc.

  • Will you need extra material? It’s always smart to buy 10% more flooring than what you think you’ll need to account for bad pieces, mistakes, or future repairs.

  • Have you considered what finishing the room will have? You should make sure to coordinate your crown molding, transitions, and accessories.

Common Flooring Installation Questions

What is a professional flooring measure?

A professional floor measure accounts for the total floor space that needs to be replaced. Our approach is to measure each room separately and add their totals together. Then, add extra for trimming and to have spare flooring on hand for future use.

We will create an initial sketch of the rooms where flooring will be installed. Our approach includes:

  1. Measuring the length and width of each room at its longest or widest point. We will round up to the nearest half foot. For example, a room 14’ 4” wide would be considered 14” 6” wide.

  2. Multiplying the length times the width to determine the number of square feet in each room. For example, for a room 20’ long and 15’ wide: 20 x 15 = 300 square feet.

  3. Adding the sums together for each room to determine total square feet to be covered with the flooring.

We will account for any structures that may exist in the room to create the most accurate estimate of flooring needed.

How do you install laminate flooring?

Typically we will follow these steps when installing laminate flooring:

  • Acclimate the planks and prep the subfloor

  • Trim door jambs

  • Install underlayment

  • Lay the first row of laminate planks

  • Continue laying planks

  • Add finishing touches

How do you install vinyl plank flooring?

  1. Inspect the subfloor, and install luan if necessary

  2. If needed, install underlayment

  3. Start the first course

  4. Install the rest of your planks

How much does it usually cost to install flooring?

Flooring installation can cost anywhere from $2 to $20 per square foot installed or $1,000 to $10,000 for 500 square feet of flooring. The national average flooring installation cost is around $7 per square foot, which includes the cost of both materials and labor.

What type of flooring will last the longest?

Porcelain and ceramic are some of the most durable flooring materials available, and they require little maintenance. Tile flooring is also moisture resistant, making it the perfect choice for areas where spills are common like bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms.

What type of flooring is cheapest to install?

Laminate is one of the most cost-effective flooring choices for homeowners. Laminate is a good choice for people who are hard on floors, so if you have children and pets, it’s a great option.

How often should you replace your flooring?

Wood flooring lasts about 100 years, or even more with proper upkeep. Vinyl flooring will last about 50 years, while you’ll get about 10 years out of your carpet. When it comes to tile flooring, life expectancy depends on the type of tile, maintenance, and amount of foot traffic.

Is it better to have the same type of flooring throughout the house?

There is no need to change flooring from room to room. We often work with homeowners who feel the urge to pick different flooring for every room of their home, but there is absolutely no need to do this. Your home will look best if you create one consistent look that travels from room to room. One of the most significant benefits of using the same flooring throughout the house is that even if your house is very small, the same flooring will make it appear very large and airy.
